How To Choose The Best Bicycle Accessories

What Is The Purpose Of A Bicycle Accessories?

Bicycle accessories are those small devices which enhance the performance of bicycles. Bike accessories include different types of gears, lights, reflectors, etc. There are many other accessories available for bikes too. Some of these accessories are very useful while riding, others are only decorative. Let us discuss each type of accessory individually.

Gears

The most important thing about gears is that they increase the speed of the bicycle. If you ride with low gear, you cannot go fast. But if you shift into high gear, you can reach higher speeds. Gears are generally classified into three categories - front, rear, and chain drive. Front gears are attached to pedals and allow you to pedal faster. Rear gears are connected to the back wheel and provide greater resistance to pedaling. Chain drives are the simplest form of gearing and are found on mountain bikes. In case of derailleur gears, there are two sets of sprockets called freewheel and fixed. Freewheels rotate freely and fixings are attached to the frame. Fixed sprocket wheels are fixed to the frame and are always present.

Lights

There are several kinds of lights available for cyclists. Reflective ones are mainly used by motorists while driving cars. They are designed so that drivers see them more clearly. Flashlights are used by riders who travel alone late night or early morning hours. Headlamps are used by bikers during day time. All these lights are mounted on the handlebars of the bicycle. Lights are also available for pillion passengers. For example, headlight kits are available for pillion riders.

Reflectors

These are round discs placed above the headlights. They reflect light towards the road ahead. Most of the reflectors are white in color. However, colored ones are also available.

Helmets

Cyclists must wear helmets to avoid injuries caused due to accidents. Helmets are required by law in almost all countries. Bicycles are considered vehicles and therefore require helmet safety standards. Helmet manufacturers design helmets according to international standards.

Pump Gages

This gauge measures air pressure inside the tires. Air pressure affects tire traction and braking ability. Low air pressure causes poor grip and makes the brakes ineffective. High air pressure results in decreased traction and increased brake fade. Pump gages are inexpensive and easy to install.

Tires

Tire tread depth determines the amount of friction between the tire and the ground. Tread depth varies depending upon weather conditions. Rubber compounds change based on temperature and moisture levels. Tire size depends on the weight of the rider and the terrain.

Pedals

Most of the modern bicycles are equipped with adjustable pedals. Pedal position controls the speed of the bicycle. Adjustable pedals enable the cyclist to choose his/her preferred position.

Saddles

Saddle designs vary widely. Saddles are designed to suit individual preferences. Specially shaped saddles improve comfort and reduce fatigue.

The Importance of Purchasing Quality Bicycle Accessories

Bicycle accessories are important because they allow us to enjoy our bikes more fully. For example, there are many different types of lights available which allow cyclists to ride safely during dark hours. There are also many different kinds of tires that provide superior traction while riding. In addition, there are many other products that can be purchased to enhance the comfort level of cycling. All these accessories can be found online and at local stores. However, before making a purchase, we must ensure that the product meets our needs. We must know exactly what we require so that we can choose wisely.

How To Choose Bike Lights

There are several factors that we must take into consideration when choosing a light. First, we must determine whether we want a front-facing or rear facing light. Front-facing lights illuminate only the road ahead of us. Rear-facing lights illuminate both the road ahead of us and behind us. If we are traveling alone, we might prefer a rear-facing light since it makes us safer by illuminating the road behind us. However, if we are with others, we might prefer a front-facing light since it enables us to see where our friends are located. Next, we must decide between LED lights and incandescent bulbs. Incandescent lights give off heat which could cause discomfort to riders who are wearing gloves. LEDs produce no heat and therefore are ideal for those who suffer from cold hands. Finally, we must select either rechargeable batteries or replaceable ones. Rechargeable batteries last longer and are cheaper than replaceable ones. Therefore, we should always opt for rechargeables unless we plan to cycle long distances.

Types Of Tires Available

Tire selection depends upon the type of terrain we intend to travel on. Mountain bikers typically prefer knobby tires since they grip well on rough roads. Road racers prefer slick tires since they glide across pavement effortlessly. Cyclists who wish to avoid potholes should go for tubeless tires. Tubeless tires eliminate the need for tubes and thus reduce maintenance costs. Other considerations include tire size, tread depth, and width. Tire size refers to the diameter of the wheel. Smaller wheels are easier to maneuver around tight spaces. Larger wheels enable us to cover greater distances. Tread depth determines how far the tire contacts the ground. Deep treads dig into the dirt providing excellent traction. Wide tires increase stability and control.

Other Types Of Cycling Equipment

Cyclist helmets are designed to protect the head of the wearer. Helmets range from inexpensive plastic models to expensive metal models. Plastic helmets are lighter and more affordable. Metal helmets are heavier and more durable. Both styles of helmets are effective in preventing injury. Another piece of safety gear includes elbow and knee guards. Elbow and knee guards are worn to protect the elbows and knees respectively. Some cyclists wear leg warmers to stay warmer. Leg warmers are especially useful during winter months. Lastly, cyclist sunglasses are essential for protecting eyes from wind and sun. Sunglasses are available in prescription lenses and non-prescription versions. Prescription glasses are required for driving motor vehicles. Non-prescription glasses are suitable for most activities including bicycling.

Features To Look For When Buying A Bicycle Accessories

Bicycle accessories are essential tools for anyone who rides a bicycle. Whether you ride recreationally or competitively, there are many different types of accessories available. The most important accessory for a cyclist is probably the helmet. Helmets provide safety by protecting cyclists' heads from injury during crashes. Other common bicycle accessories include lights, reflectors, locks, baskets, racks, panniers, and other gear.

Helmet

The best helmets are those with EPS foam padding. EPS stands for Expanded Polystyrene Foam. EPS foams are lightweight, durable, and shock absorbent. Most cycling enthusiasts agree that EPS foams are the safest type of padding because they reduce impact forces on the head. If you're willing to pay more money for safer riding, then go ahead and purchase an EPS-foamed helmet.

Lights

Cyclists must be able to see where they're going while riding. Lights are necessary for night riding. Many bicycles come equipped with front and rear lights. Front light kits typically consist of two white LED bulbs mounted on either side of the handlebars. Rear light kits consist of three red LEDs mounted on the back of the seatpost. Both front and rear lights are useful for illuminating dark roads and paths.

Reflector

Many cyclists choose to mount reflective tape onto their clothing so that motorists can spot them easier. Reflective tape comes in strips that attach to clothing using Velcro. Some reflective tapes are designed specifically for cyclists. Others are meant for general outdoor use.

Lock

Most bikes are secured with U-locks. U-lock keys are small metal cylinders that fit into the lock mechanism. Locks are useful for securing your bike to stationary objects. U-locks are easy to operate and inexpensive.

Racks

Some cyclists prefer to carry their belongings in bags rather than wearing them around their waist. Bags are convenient for carrying water bottles, snacks, maps, etc. Pannier bags are particularly popular among commuters. Panniers are large saddlebags attached to the frame of the bicycle. They allow riders to store larger loads inside the bag.

Panniers

Panniers are great for storing groceries, camping supplies, or anything else that needs to stay dry. Panniers are especially helpful for commuting since they allow cyclists to carry everything needed for a day's ride in one location.

Baskets

Carrying stuff in a basket makes transporting bulky items easier. Baskets are good for holding smaller items such as gloves, hats, scarves, sunglasses, cell phones, wallets, etc. Basket straps are handy for attaching baskets to the sides of the bicycle.

Other Bike Accessories

There are several other accessories worth considering before purchasing a bicycle. One example is a bell. Bells are useful for alerting pedestrians and drivers of your presence.

Different Types of Bicycle Accessories

Bicycle accessories include many different kinds of products which are designed to enhance the performance of bicycles. Some of these accessories are meant to be attached directly to the frame while others are intended to be mounted onto the handlebars. The most common accessory is probably the helmet. Other popular accessories include lights, reflectors, racks, baskets, panniers, mudguards, etc. There are so many different types of accessories available today that there really isn’t anything that cannot be added to a bicycle. However, the best way to decide whether or not something is right for you is by trying it out. If you think that something sounds interesting, go ahead and give it a shot!

Helmet

The most obvious type of bicycle accessory is the helmet. Helmets are worn by cyclists to provide head protection during cycling. Most helmets are constructed with a hard outer shell and padding inside. In addition to protecting the rider’s head, helmets can also reduce the risk of injury caused by falls. While helmets are very important safety devices, they aren’t always necessary. For example, children who ride bikes rarely suffer serious injuries because they lack the strength required to cause significant harm to themselves. Also, wearing a helmet does not guarantee complete protection. Even though helmets are generally considered safe, they still pose risks. One of the biggest dangers associated with helmets is that they can become dislodged during accidents. Another danger is that they can actually increase the chances of suffering head trauma.

Lights

Another kind of bicycle accessory is the light. Lights are essential tools for cyclists. Without proper lighting, riders could potentially run into trouble. Many times, roads are poorly lit making it difficult for drivers to see bicyclists. Therefore, it is imperative that cyclists carry adequate lighting. Cyclist’s lights must meet certain standards set forth by law. For instance, lights must emit enough visible light to illuminate the road 50 feet away. Additionally, lights must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions including rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog, dust storms, and other adverse environmental factors. Finally, lights must be easy to mount and remove.

Racks

Racks are another type of bicycle accessory. Racks allow users to store items such as groceries, luggage, or camping gear. As opposed to carrying everything in bags, racks make it easier to transport heavy loads. Racks are especially useful for long trips where large amounts of cargo must be transported. Because of their size, racks are typically placed on top of the rear wheel. Although racks are convenient, they can sometimes interfere with the operation of brakes and derailleurs.

Cargo Bags

Cargo bags are another type of bicycle accessory. Cargo bags are specifically designed to hold bulky objects such as clothing, shoes, backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, food supplies, and more. Like racks, cargo bags are commonly found on the tops of rear wheels. Unlike racks, however, cargo bags are usually smaller and lighter. Thus, they are ideal for short trips rather than lengthy ones.
