What Is The Purpose Of A Bicycle Crank?

The purpose of a bicycle crank is to convert human power into mechanical motion. In other words, the crank turns the pedals which turn the chain which moves the rear wheel. There are two types of bicycles; fixed gear bikes and freestyle bikes. Fixed-gear bikes have no gears so there is only one speed. Freestyle bikes have multiple speeds because they have different sized chains with varying numbers of teeth. Both kinds of bikes require a bicycle crank to operate properly.

Fixed Gear Bikes

On a fixed-gear bike, the rider sits down on the seat and places his feet on the pedal. He pushes down on the pedal causing the crank arm to rotate. As the crank rotates, the pedal spins around its axis. The rotation of the crank causes the pedals to spin around their axes. Because the chain has more teeth than the crank, the chain must be turned by a larger diameter sprocket. The smaller diameter sprocket attached to the bottom bracket is called the front sprocket. The larger diameter sprocket attached to the top tube is called the back sprocket. The chain connects these two sprockets together. The chain goes around the back sprocket and comes back to connect to the front sprocket. At each end of the chain is a small metal pin called a roller bearing. The roller bearings allow the chain to slide freely along the length of the chain while allowing the chain to stay connected to both sprockets. If the chain was allowed to fall off the sprockets, the cyclist could lose control of the bike. To stop the chain from falling off the sprockets, the cyclist uses a brake lever located near the handlebars. Pulling the brake lever stops the chain from turning. Once the chain is stopped, the cyclist can remove his foot from the pedal.

Freestyle Bicycles

On a freestyle bike, the rider stands up on the seat and holds onto the frame using handholds. He pulls himself forward by pushing down on the pedals. This action causes the crank to rotate. The rotating crank causes the pedals to spin around their axes. Because the chain has fewer teeth than the crank, the chain does not have to be rotated by a large diameter sprocket. Instead, the chain is driven by a smaller diameter sprocket attached to the bottom bracket. The chain attaches directly to the smaller diameter sprocket. The chain goes around the smaller diameter sprocket and returns to attach to the larger diameter sprocket. At each end of the chain is a small metal pin called a roller bearing. The roller bearings allow the chain to slide freely along the length of the chain while allowing the chain to remain connected to both sprockets. Like the fixed-gear bike, the freestyle bike has a brake lever near the handlebar. Pulling the brake lever stops the chain from turning. Once the chain is stopped, the cyclist can release his grip on the frame and stand upright.
