How To Choose The Best Kayak Vest

What Is The Purpose Of Kayak Vest?

Kayaks are great watercraft because they allow us to travel long distances while remaining relatively safe. However, there are many dangers associated with being in the ocean. One of these dangers is drowning. To avoid drowning, we must be able to stay afloat and maintain our buoyancy. If we cannot do so, we could end up sinking into the depths of the sea. In order to remain afloat, we must be wearing something called a "lifejacket".

How Does A Life Jacket Help Keep Me Afloat?

The most important thing about a life jacket is its ability to float. Without proper buoyancy, you will sink to the bottom of the ocean. Buoyancy is measured by two factors; weight and volume. Volume refers to the size of the space taken up by the life jacket. For example, a small child has more body fat than muscle tissue. As a result, he/she weighs very little, yet his/her body takes up a lot of room. Therefore, he/she needs a large volume of air inside him/her to achieve adequate buoyancy. Conversely, a person who is muscular and fit will weigh more than someone who is skinny and weak. Because of this, he/she will require only a smaller volume of air to achieve adequate buoyancy.

Buoyancy Basics

In addition to weighing and occupying volume, another factor affecting buoyancy is density. Density refers to the relative heaviness or lightness of different materials. Water is heavier than air, which is why it sinks. Air is lighter than water, which is why it floats. Most life jackets consist of foam-like material that is denser than water. This property gives the life jacket enough weight to keep you afloat.

Types of Life Jackets

There are three main types of lifejackets available today. Each type serves a specific function. There are inflatable life jackets, rigid-shell life jackets, and hybrid life jackets. All three types provide varying levels of safety depending upon the environment in which they're worn.

Inflatable Life Jackets

An inflatable life jacket is designed to quickly fill with air once submerged. Once inflated, the life jacket becomes extremely buoyant. An inflatable life jacket works best in calm waters where waves aren't too big. Waves cause the life jacket to become deflated. Even though the life jacket is deflated, it still maintains enough buoyancy to keep you afloat.

Rigid Shell Life Jackets

A rigid shell life jacket is constructed using thick layers of fabric. Unlike an inflatable life jacket, a rigid shell life jacket does not rely on inflation to retain its shape. Instead, the life jacket relies on rigidity to hold itself together. Rigid shell life jackets are typically used in rough seas.

Hybrid Life Jackets

A hybrid life jacket combines both inflatable and rigid shells. Hybrid life jackets are ideal for boaters who plan to venture into rougher waters.

The Importance of Purchasing a Quality Kayak Vest

Kayaks are great fun! However, there are many different types of kayaks available today, which makes choosing the right type difficult. If you're planning on taking part in recreational activities such as fishing or swimming, you might be interested in purchasing a kayak vest. There are several benefits associated with wearing a kayak vest while participating in these activities. Here we discuss why you should purchase a high-quality kayak vest.

Helps Keep You Safe

Wearing a kayak vest has been proven to increase safety during water sports. In fact, it was found that wearing a vest reduced the risk of drowning by more than 50%. While wearing a vest does not guarantee survival, it certainly increases your chances of surviving a fall into the water. Wearing a vest offers additional protection because it prevents you from sinking beneath the waterline. Additionally, wearing a vest reduces the chance of being injured due to impact forces. Impact injuries occur when objects strike the body. For example, falling rocks can cause injury if struck directly on the head. To avoid such injuries, wearing a vest protects the wearer from direct impacts.

Makes Kayaking More Comfortable

While paddling, it is important to maintain proper posture. Proper posture ensures that you remain comfortable throughout your activity. Unfortunately, improper posture can lead to muscle fatigue and pain. As a result, you could experience discomfort while paddling. Fortunately, wearing a kayak vest can reduce muscular strain and provide comfort while paddling. Furthermore, wearing a vest can improve balance and coordination.

Increases Comfort During Paddling

Paddlers who choose to participate in outdoor activities must contend with cold weather conditions. Cold temperatures can affect performance and enjoyment. Luckily, wearing a kayak vest can help alleviate the effects of cold weather. First, the material of the vest insulates the user from the elements. Second, the design of the vest promotes heat retention. Third, the padding inside the vest absorbs perspiration and moisture. Finally, the adjustable straps allow users to customize the fit of the vest according to their preferences.

Improves Performance

Many athletes prefer to paddle outdoors rather than indoors. One reason for this preference is that outdoor environments promote greater physical fitness. Another benefit of paddling outside is that it allows you to enjoy nature. However, paddling in colder climates can prove challenging. Fortunately, wearing a kayak vest can enhance your ability to perform well in cooler weather. First, the insulation properties of the vest keep you warm. Next, the padded interior of the vest improves circulation and enhances blood flow. Finally, the adjustable straps ensure a perfect fit so that you stay comfortably upright while paddling.

Enhances Safety

As mentioned above, wearing a kayak vest can significantly decrease the likelihood of drowning. However, another danger exists when using a kayak. That danger involves collisions between boats. Collisions between boats can happen quickly and unexpectedly. Therefore, it is essential that you know how to respond appropriately when involved in a collision. Fortunately, wearing a kayak vest can help you recognize potential dangers before they become serious problems.

Features To Look For When Buying A Kayak Vest

Buying a kayak vest is a great way to stay safe while paddling. There are many features to look for when purchasing a kayak vest.

Size - The size of the vest needs to fit properly so that it doesn’t restrict movement. If the vest does not fit well, it could be uncomfortable and cause chafing. Also, if the vest fits too tightly around the neck, it might cut off circulation to the head and hands which could lead to numbness and tingling.

Material – Choose a material that is durable enough to withstand rough conditions. Some materials include nylon, polyester, cotton, and other synthetic fibers.

How To Use Life Jackets Properly

Life jackets are designed to keep swimmers afloat in case of emergency situations. However, most people who wear life jackets fail to know how to use them correctly.

Wear it with pride! Show everyone that you are prepared by wearing your life jacket proudly.

Types of Vests

There are different types of vests available today. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Flotation Devices - Flotation devices are worn by those who plan to go into the water. These vests are typically buoyant and float upright.

Dive Bags - Dive bags are meant to be carried underwater. They are generally smaller than flotation devices and are more compact.

Different Types of Kayak Vests

Kayaks are great fun and there are many different styles available. If you're planning on taking part in a paddling activity, you might be interested in purchasing a kayak vest. There are three main types of kayak vests available; inflatable, foam and neoprene. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages so let's take a closer look at each.

Inflatable Vest

The most common style of kayak vest is the inflatable vest. Inflatable vests are very easy to put on and remove, making them ideal for beginners who are learning how to paddle. The downside with these vests is that they require regular maintenance which could mean spending money on air pumps and other accessories. However, if you only plan on using your kayak once or twice a week, then an inflatable vest is probably the best option for you.

Foam Vest

Another popular choice is the foam vest. Foam vests are more durable than inflatables because they contain thicker material. This makes them easier to maintain and last longer. Although foam vests are heavier than inflatables, they provide greater stability and support. Some models of foam vests include shoulder straps and chest pockets for storing valuables. Another advantage of foam vests is that they are cheaper than inflatables.

Neoprene Vest

Finally, we have the neoprene vest. Neoprenes are extremely lightweight and comfortable. They fit snugly around the body and are designed to stay dry during activities. Because they are waterproof, they are suitable for both warm and cold weather conditions. Neoprenes are also breathable, meaning they allow moisture vapour to escape while preventing water ingress. Neoprenes are a good choice for those who enjoy outdoor sports and are likely to go swimming regularly.

How To Choose Which Type Is Right For Me?

There are pros and cons associated with each type of kayak vest. So before choosing between the options, think carefully about why you'd choose one over another. Once you've answered these questions, you'll know whether you need an inflatable, foam or neoprene vest.
