FAQs: Hiking Pants

Are Hiking Pants Warm?

Hiking pants are often advertised as either winter pants or summer pants. Both types of pants have very distinct constructions, so it is up to you to decide which one to buy.

When choosing which type of fabric to choose, there are two things you should consider. The climate and weather conditions in the area you'll be using them are also important.

Can You Waterproof Hiking Pants?

You can waterproof hiking pants by following simple steps. Hiking pants are usually made from nylon or polyester and are water-resistant or waterproof. This durable water repellency coating (DWR), can wear over time. However, you can still find products or use common household items to restore this quality to your pants. Let's take a look at what you can do.

How Should Hiking Pants Fit?

You can summarize the fit of hiking pants by finding a pair that you like, and then trying them on to feel how they feel. You should ensure that the size you choose is appropriate for your body, that it is comfortable, and that your range of motion is maintained. This can be done by simply moving your legs, whether you are sitting, sitting, squatting or walking. You should look at the material used. Pants made from good quality nylon will be more durable, water-resistant, and breathable. You can then examine the pockets and determine if they are suitable for what you intend to keep inside. To ensure that zippers work correctly and don't stick or jam, you should always check them. If you choose to purchase a pair of convertible pants, make sure they work properly and that you can remove the legs easily. When hiking, it is important to consider the terrain and climate of your hikes so that you don't get too hot or too cold.

How many styles of hiking pants are there?

There are two main styles to choose from: the standard hiking pants or the convertible pants.

It is not possible to convert standard hiking pants, or non-convertible hiking pants, into hiking shorts. You can remove the hiking pants from the boots by using the zippers at the lower leg.

You can convert a pair of hiking pants into shorts by purchasing convertible hiking pants. To zip the lower leg, you will only need a zipper.

Because it doesn't have an extra zipper at the upper leg, the standard unit is cleaner and more fluid. Its lightweight and clean appearance allow it to be worn as casual pants.

Convertible hiking pants offer more flexibility as you can make them into shorts for warmer days. These pants can keep your legs warm in colder temperatures.

Can I Wear Hiking Pants For Skiing?

Given their name, hiking pants are designed to be worn for active outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, and climbing. It is possible to find hiking trousers that are strong and resistant to the elements, which can be used to ski.

Buyer's Guide: Hiking Pants

Hiking Pants: List of Must Haves

Although not the most expensive piece of equipment, there are still some things that anyone who is looking for hiking pants should be aware of.

Attached Belt

A lot of hiking pants include a belt. Some have the belt permanently attached. Most people enjoy a belt that is permanently attached. However, I don't like a belt that is permanently attached to my pants. I don't wear a belt, so having it attached to my pant isn’t an ideal solution. Second, I prefer to be able to remove a belt from my pant, not have it "sewed in" to the waistband. The style you choose depends on your hiking requirements. However, before purchasing a pair of hiking trousers, make sure that the belt (assuming it comes with one) is removable or permanently sewn into the waistband.

Elastic Waistband

While many hiking pants have elastic waistbands but not all of them do. I don't like pants that lack flexibility in the waistband. The waistband allows the pant to be used due to weight variations. It also makes it much more comfortable. However, elastic waistbands are not something I like. The decision about whether or not to purchase a hiking pant that has an elastic waistband is up to you. Make sure you know what kind of waistband your hiking pant has before buying it.

Pockets and Pocket Sizes

Every hiking pant has at least two pockets, the two traditional handwarmer pockets that are found on all types of pants. Many hiking pants have one to two large cargo pockets below the handwarmer pockets. These large cargo pockets are indispensable for carrying my cell phone, small snacks, wallet, and sunglasses while hiking. The only problem with the pockets is that they add weight to the pant and don't look as good.

Cargo pockets are "last year" in fashion and style. Cargo pockets don't bother me because I prefer function to form. It may be an issue for others, however. When shopping for hiking pants, make sure to check if there are cargo pockets and where they are located. Also, be aware of how bulky or large they are.

Quality is paramount

These pants are tough. They will be dragged across rocks and have thorns or twigs snapped against their legs, while still having to travel miles after miles.

Poor quality hiking pants can lead to unpleasant surprises on the trail. This can be anything from a button popping off, to a pocket leaking or large rips.

A quality hiking pant is more durable than a Big Box brand. High-quality hiking pants are made of special nylon, which is very soft and quiet. High-quality hiking pants feel almost "blanket soft" upon touch. High-quality pants, when you rub the fabric together, make no sound.

Low-quality pants, however, are made of cheaper nylon. This nylon is not only susceptible to rips or other problems but is also stiffer and harder. It can also be louder when it rubs against itself (which is what happens when you walk).

To put it bluntly, I recommend spending more to get a high-quality pair of hiking pants than to deal with the hassles and costs of cheap ones. Quality pants will last longer and you will enjoy wearing them day after day, mile after hour.

Are you waterproof?

Some hiking pants can be waterproof. Waterproof hiking pants are made with a layer of Goretex or other similar membranes that allows the pants to breathe and keeps out the rain. Waterproof hiking pants are typically more expensive than non-waterproof ones.

A waterproof hiking pant is essential for hikers who spend a lot of time in wet conditions. This is especially important for backpackers. For "fair-weather" hikers, waterproof hiking pants might not be worth the extra expense.
