FAQs: Hiking Poles

Is it better to hike with one pole or two?

Two trekking poles are better than one regular walking stick. Two poles provide symmetrical support which one stick does not.

Why are trekking poles bad?

They are not. Walking poles can exercise your arms and keep your hands from getting too fat as you climb. Poor circulation can cause swelling of your wrists, fingers, and hands if you keep your arms straight up while you climb.

Are hiking poles worth it?

The extra weight of trekking poles is worth it. Scientific evidence suggests that trekking poles reduce the force exerted on the body. This news is great for people with hip or knee injuries and those who often hike with a heavy backpack.

Why do hikers use sticks?

You'll be able to balance better and have greater stability if you have four points of contact with the ground. Hiking sticks are best for uneven terrain, steep ascents and descents, water crossings, snow, and treks over loose rocks and wet trails.

What is the difference between a hiking pole and a trekking pole?

Hiking poles and trekking poles are almost the same things. They are used to stabilize walkers and help them get into a rhythm. The 4 Nordic walking poles work best on smoother terrain, including hills, beaches, and other steep terrains.

Buyer's Guide: Hiking Poles

Buyers' Guide: Hiking Poles

Hiking poles are great for adding stability and comfort to your hike, whether you're hiking across the country or just going on a weekend trip. Although trekking poles are not essential, many backpackers find them to be invaluable. They reduce the hard impact on the knees and provide stability while traversing rivers. Some hikers use trekking poles when pitching their light tents.

PRICE - We are more comfortable spending a little more to have the assurance that our poles will not fail even if we put our bodies' weight on them.

WEIGHT- A trekking pole's weight should be a top consideration when choosing the best option. The hiking shoe theory states that every ounce counts for energy conservation when your arms are lifted thousands of times per day. A heavier, more durable pair might be better if you are only going on short day hikes and/or do lots of winter trekking.

DURABILITY - When crossing a stream or trying to balance on a narrow ridge, it is important to ensure that your trekking poles are there for you. While carbon fiber poles are lighter, more efficient, and last longer, they are less durable. Although aluminum poles are heavier than carbon fiber, they tend to be more durable and can be repaired in the field more easily.

GRIPS- Trekking poles can cause friction between your hands and fingers that can cause blisters or soreness. It's crucial to select poles that are comfortable. The majority of trekking pole grips are made either from cork or foam. While foam tends to be more durable and comfortable, cork is better for comfort and durability.

COMPACTABILITY - It's a good idea to have trekking poles that can fold down for easy storage in your backpack or luggage when not in use. The Z-poles are the most compact and have the shortest length.
