The hiking shoe theory states that every ounce counts for energy conservation when your arms are lifted thousands of times per day. A heavier, more durable pair might be better if you are only going on short day hikes and/or do lots of winter trekking.
DURABILITY - When crossing a stream or trying to balance on a narrow ridge, it is important to ensure that your trekking poles are there for you. While carbon fiber poles are lighter, more efficient, and last longer, they are less durable. Although aluminum poles are heavier than carbon fiber, they tend to be more durable and can be repaired in the field more easily.
GRIPS- Trekking poles can cause friction between your hands and fingers that can cause blisters or soreness. It's crucial to select poles that are comfortable. The majority of trekking pole grips are made either from cork or foam. While foam tends to be more durable and comfortable, cork is better for comfort and durability.
COMPACTABILITY - It's a good idea to have trekking poles that can fold down for easy storage in your backpack or luggage when not in use. The Z-poles are the most compact and have the shortest length.
