FAQs: Hiking Socks

Should hiking socks fit tight?

To avoid blisters and excess material, size down if you're in between sizes. How socks should fit: Try socks on. Make sure they are snug but not too tight. When the heel cup aligns with your heel, a sock is properly fitted.

Why are cotton socks bad for hiking?

Never use cotton socks for hiking. Cotton soaks moisture and takes forever to dry. To keep warm but still retain moisture, wool is a good choice. If your feet sweat a lot, synthetic fibers will work better than natural fibers to wick away moisture.

Do hiking socks make a difference?

Blisters can be prevented by wearing a hiking sock. A hiking sock will not rub against your back like a cotton sock. It also protects you from the rubbing that your boots might cause.

Should hiking socks be thick or thin?

Light socks for hiking on warm days and short, easy trails are the best. For tougher hikes, but still keeping you warm, socks of medium thickness are the best. For colder conditions and tough hikes, thick socks are the best hiking socks.

How do you know what size socks to buy?

Your sock size is determined by the length of your foot in inches, measured from the heel to the tip of your toe. When socks are labeled as "sock size 9-11" and "sock sizes 10-13", it is referring to the length of your foot in inches.

Buyer's Guide: Hiking Socks

What Fits You Best: What You need to know in Choosing your Hiking Socks

It makes all the difference to have the right weight, materials, length, and size for the activity that you are doing. This will determine whether your feet are happy or red-blinded barking feet. You can choose from many options, but what you want is the best balance between all of these options.

CHOOSING A SOCK WEIGHT

      • Liners

Liners may be able to solve your blister problems if you have a problem with them. The liners are made of either synthetic polypropylene or silk and wick moisture away from the feet, thereby eliminating the problem. For a great hiking outfit, you can wear the liner by itself on hot days or with another lightweight sock.

      • Lightweight

Hiking socks should be lightweight and comfortable. These socks are designed to wick moisture away from your feet and keep them dry. They can be worn with or without liners.

      • Midweight

These socks are thicker and provide warmth and comfort. These socks often have additional cushioning at the ball and heel of the feet. This is helpful for long days on the trail and for climbing mountains that involve hiking across the talus scree field.

      • Heavyweight:

These socks are among the most luxurious, warmest, and cushioned. These socks are meant for mountaineering expeditions and alpine pursuits. However, they can also be used as cozy camp socks.

TOP MATERIALS AVAILABLE IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Another important thing to remember is that different materials have different wicking and drying properties. These are some of the options that you should consider.

      1. Alpaca wool - Because the individual fibers are shorter, it is less itchy than regular wool. This makes it more comfortable and soft against your skin. This hypoallergenic material contains no lanolin and is suitable for sensitive skin. It is a great insulator and wicks water well so it can be used in many different applications.
      2. Bamboo - Bamboo is another popular material due to its hollow structure, which makes them super-absorbent. This material effectively wicks water away from the skin and offers breathability comparable with cotton or wool.
      • Cotton / Cotton Blends - While cotton is one of the most comfortable natural fabrics, it is also very absorbent and has slow drying. It is not recommended for outdoor use as it is not insulating when wet. However, many socks take advantage of this comfort and provide blends. The cotton ratio will be lower the hotter and wetter the socks.
      • Merino Wool - This unique material is made from New Zealand sheep with softer wool than regular wool. The material has the same water-repelling and insulation properties as regular wool but it is less hot to the feet while hiking.
      • Silk / Silk Blends - Silk is a natural fabric that has advanced properties. Silk is luxuriously soft and wicks moisture away from the feet. It is also a good choice for warm-weather hiking and as the main material of a sock lining.
      • Synthetic Blends - Modern hiking socks are often made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials. Coolmax and polypropylene improve the moisture-wicking properties of wool socks. Many hiking socks come with spandex and nylon to give them a more fitted look. This is important because it helps to maintain the socks' shape and reduces friction. Polyester and rayon are other synthetic options.
      • Wool (Classic) - The most popular fabric for hiking socks is wool. Its insulation and moisture-wicking capabilities are top-notch. Over the years, its rugged texture has been greatly reduced in high-end garments. Soft merino wool can be used or woven with synthetic fabrics.

THE PREFERRED LENGTH

You don't have to worry about the length of most hiking socks. A mid-length sock, if you have the option, is the best choice. It will protect your ankles against dirt, bugs, and branches on the trail. You can always get some ankle socks if you have been on several hikes and feel your ankles need to be free.
